Why Eucalypts Are the Hardest Trees to Remove in Melbourne

Most Melbourne arborists will tell you Eucalypts are the trees that swing job quotes higher than buyers expect. The species isn’t unusually large or unusually tall by global standards, but a combination of wood properties, root structure, and species-specific behaviour makes the removal genuinely harder than equivalent-size hardwoods elsewhere.

The wood is dense and the bark is misleading. A Eucalypt trunk at 60 cm diameter weighs roughly 1.6 tonnes per metre of length — denser than most northern-hemisphere hardwoods of the same size. The bark sheds in large sheets that make it look like the tree is structurally compromised, but the inner wood is often perfectly sound. Inexperienced quoters see the bark loss and price the job as “easy”; the dense trunk underneath then takes twice the chainsaw time and three times the disposal volume of what they planned for.

Limb drop is a real and unpredictable behaviour. Healthy Eucalypts shed major limbs without warning on hot still days — the so-called “Summer Branch Drop” phenomenon documented across all Eucalyptus species. This makes climbing-and-rigging dismantling riskier than on an equivalent Oak or Plane, and is one of the reasons our crews favour EWP-assisted work for any Eucalypt above 15 metres.

Root systems are deep and aggressive. River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and Spotted Gum (Corymbia maculata) send tap roots 4-6 metres deep into clay soils searching for moisture. Stump grinding deeper than 30 cm into these roots needs heavy-duty equipment; “stump removal” on a 50-year-old River Red can be a half-day job in itself. Surface lateral roots can extend 1-1.5× the canopy radius, so any landscaping near a removed Eucalypt should account for buried roots persisting in the soil for 5-10 years.

Species protections vary by council. Eucalypts native to Victoria — particularly River Red, Manna Gum, Yellow Box, and Spotted Gum — are protected under several Melbourne council local laws even when planted in private gardens. Heritage Overlays in Boroondara, Stonnington, and parts of Yarra catch large established Eucalypts almost automatically. The permit pathway adds 2-6 weeks before any work can start.
