Rob and his team arrived on time and did a great job, explaining exactly what the job entailed to prune branches off a huge gum tree. The area around the tree was surrounded by garden and garden pots. The team were very careful to ensure no damage occurred to plants and pots. The job was completed quickly and professionally with the cleanup excellent. All the team members worked very well together and coordinated all the various tasks efficiently. They made the time to do an extra job for my daughter next door and did a great cleanup at the finish. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them .Thanks Fellas.

Such a lovely family business. Genuinely nice people who gave us a more than fair quote to remove a dead gum tree, and remove some low hanging branches from another. So efficient, safe and left our yard cleaner than they found it - and left ud some firewood. Cannot fault the service and will use them again for any future needs. You will not find a better service or more beautiful genuine family.

We are in Eltham and saw Rob and his team working across the road. We asked him to come and quote on removing some trees from our property. Rob came straight away and spoke about what they would do and gave a very reasonable price as well as a prompt date they could do the work. They just finished, did a great job of taking 5 medium sized tree down and more importantly cleaned up really well. I would highly recommend Precision to anyone wanting tree work done

We needed help with some overgrown trees that had gotten out of control, the trees were ornamental pear trees. From the start Rob was great to deal with friendly, professional and really knowledgeable. The team removed the trees efficiently and also took care of the stump grinding, and left me the mulch. Everything was done safely. What really stood out was how easy they were to communicate with and how clean they left the place afterwards no mess, no hassle, just a great result.Highly recommend Rob and the team if you’re looking for reliable and professional tree removal services!

Stump Grinding in Melbourne

Tree removal almost always leaves a stump. Most clients want it ground out on the same visit — same crew, same disposal, no second call-out. Stump grinding adds $150-$600 depending on stump diameter and root spread, but only if you choose to add it.

Why Large Tree Removal Needs Specialist Equipment in Melbourne

A “large tree” in Melbourne starts at about 15 metres tall or 60 cm trunk diameter. Once you cross those thresholds, the removal stops being a chainsaw-and-rope job and becomes specialist work. Here’s why the equipment matters, and what to look for when comparing quotes.

Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) replace climbing on most large jobs. An EWP is a boom-mounted bucket that lifts an arborist 18-30 metres into the canopy, allowing precise sectional dismantling without the risk of climber rope failure or branch-shock injury. EWPs cost $1,200-$2,200 a day to hire, which is why they only get used on jobs that genuinely need them — but on a 20-metre Eucalypt, the productivity gain and the safety margin make them the right call.

Cranes are required for branch sections over 500 kg. A single Spotted Gum limb at 25 metres can weigh 800 kg-1.5 tonnes. Lowering that on rope is feasible but high-risk; on a residential site with structures nearby, a 25-tonne crane is the safer answer. Crane hire costs $2,500-$5,500 per day including operator and rigger, which is why crane jobs typically run two or three trees in one visit to amortise the cost.

Chippers sized for 15 cm+ green wood are needed to process the volume a large tree produces. A typical residential job generates 4-8 cubic metres of green chip; a 25-metre Eucalypt can produce 15-20 cubic metres. Smaller chippers (under 12 cm capacity) will choke on the trunk sections and double the time on site.

Tipper trucks rated for 5-10 tonnes haul the volume off site. Multiple loads are standard on large-tree jobs. Skip bins are an alternative on tighter access sites but add $400-$800 per skip to the total.

Riggers carrying a Cert IV in Arboriculture oversee the dismantling sequence. Rigging the wrong section first can shock-load the rest of the tree and cause uncontrolled failure. On large Eucalypts we plan the entire dismantling sequence before the first cut.

If a quote on a large tree is suspiciously cheap, it usually means none of the above equipment is being used and the crew is climbing the tree with a chainsaw — which is how Melbourne’s worst large-tree incidents happen. The quote that comes back two or three times higher usually reflects the actual cost of doing the job safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a large tree in Melbourne?
Anything over 10 metres tall is large. The pricing and risk profile changes dramatically once a tree crosses 15m — that’s when EWP or crane access becomes the default, and the day rate climbs.
Can you remove a mature Eucalypt safely?
Yes — mature Eucalypts are our daily work. We use a combination of climbing, EWP access, and mobile cranes depending on height, access, and surrounding structures. Every job is risk-assessed on-site before we touch a chainsaw.
How much does it cost to remove a 20m tree?
A 20m tree typically sits at $2,500-$5,500 in Melbourne. The range is wide because access (truck-side vs hand-carry), species (hardwood vs softwood), and powerline proximity all swing the price by thousands.
Do you need crane access for large trees?
Not always. Climber + rope-lowering works up to about 18m if access is clear. EWP works up to 20-22m if there’s drive-in access. Crane is mandatory for 25m+ trees, trees over structures, and any tree with significant deadwood.
How long does large tree removal take?
A 10-15m tree usually takes a full day. A 15-20m tree with crane is 1 day. A 25m+ Eucalypt with crane and partial street closure is 1-2 days. We confirm the time estimate on the site visit before quoting.

Ready when you are

Big tree to come down? We’ve got the gear

Large tree removal isn’t the same job as small tree removal scaled up — it’s a different category of work needing different gear, more crew, and a properly-engineered plan. Rob calls you back the same day, comes out to inspect on-site (free), confirms whether climb / EWP / crane is the right method, and quotes a fixed price.

No bait-and-switch "extra crane fees," no surprise crew sizes — the price you see is the price we do it for.
