Rob and his team arrived on time and did a great job, explaining exactly what the job entailed to prune branches off a huge gum tree. The area around the tree was surrounded by garden and garden pots. The team were very careful to ensure no damage occurred to plants and pots. The job was completed quickly and professionally with the cleanup excellent. All the team members worked very well together and coordinated all the various tasks efficiently. They made the time to do an extra job for my daughter next door and did a great cleanup at the finish. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them .Thanks Fellas.

Such a lovely family business. Genuinely nice people who gave us a more than fair quote to remove a dead gum tree, and remove some low hanging branches from another. So efficient, safe and left our yard cleaner than they found it - and left ud some firewood. Cannot fault the service and will use them again for any future needs. You will not find a better service or more beautiful genuine family.

We are in Eltham and saw Rob and his team working across the road. We asked him to come and quote on removing some trees from our property. Rob came straight away and spoke about what they would do and gave a very reasonable price as well as a prompt date they could do the work. They just finished, did a great job of taking 5 medium sized tree down and more importantly cleaned up really well. I would highly recommend Precision to anyone wanting tree work done

We needed help with some overgrown trees that had gotten out of control, the trees were ornamental pear trees. From the start Rob was great to deal with friendly, professional and really knowledgeable. The team removed the trees efficiently and also took care of the stump grinding, and left me the mulch. Everything was done safely. What really stood out was how easy they were to communicate with and how clean they left the place afterwards no mess, no hassle, just a great result.Highly recommend Rob and the team if you’re looking for reliable and professional tree removal services!

Stump Grinding in Melbourne

Tree removal almost always leaves a stump. Most clients want it ground out on the same visit — same crew, same disposal, no second call-out. Stump grinding adds $150-$600 depending on stump diameter and root spread, but only if you choose to add it.

Why Eucalypts Are the Hardest Trees to Remove in Melbourne

Most Melbourne arborists will tell you Eucalypts are the trees that swing job quotes higher than buyers expect. The species isn’t unusually large or unusually tall by global standards, but a combination of wood properties, root structure, and species-specific behaviour makes the removal genuinely harder than equivalent-size hardwoods elsewhere.

The wood is dense and the bark is misleading. A Eucalypt trunk at 60 cm diameter weighs roughly 1.6 tonnes per metre of length — denser than most northern-hemisphere hardwoods of the same size. The bark sheds in large sheets that make it look like the tree is structurally compromised, but the inner wood is often perfectly sound. Inexperienced quoters see the bark loss and price the job as “easy”; the dense trunk underneath then takes twice the chainsaw time and three times the disposal volume of what they planned for.

Limb drop is a real and unpredictable behaviour. Healthy Eucalypts shed major limbs without warning on hot still days — the so-called “Summer Branch Drop” phenomenon documented across all Eucalyptus species. This makes climbing-and-rigging dismantling riskier than on an equivalent Oak or Plane, and is one of the reasons our crews favour EWP-assisted work for any Eucalypt above 15 metres.

Root systems are deep and aggressive. River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and Spotted Gum (Corymbia maculata) send tap roots 4-6 metres deep into clay soils searching for moisture. Stump grinding deeper than 30 cm into these roots needs heavy-duty equipment; “stump removal” on a 50-year-old River Red can be a half-day job in itself. Surface lateral roots can extend 1-1.5× the canopy radius, so any landscaping near a removed Eucalypt should account for buried roots persisting in the soil for 5-10 years.

Species protections vary by council. Eucalypts native to Victoria — particularly River Red, Manna Gum, Yellow Box, and Spotted Gum — are protected under several Melbourne council local laws even when planted in private gardens. Heritage Overlays in Boroondara, Stonnington, and parts of Yarra catch large established Eucalypts almost automatically. The permit pathway adds 2-6 weeks before any work can start.

Disposal cost is higher. Eucalypt chip has limited resale value — it doesn’t mulch as cleanly as conifer chip and has limited demand in commercial landscaping. Removal jobs on Eucalypts typically include disposal-to-tip rather than re-sale of chip, adding $200-$500 to the line-item total.

If you’re getting Eucalypt removal quotes that vary by 50% or more between providers, the gap is usually all of the above — the cheap quote underestimates one or more of these properties and the higher quote has priced them correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gum trees hard to remove in Melbourne?
Yes — Eucalypts have dense hardwood that blunts chains 3-4x faster than softwoods. Many are 20m+, drop large deadwood (widow-makers), and contain wildlife hollows that trigger council protection rules. Specialist removal.
How much does Eucalypt tree removal cost?
A 15m Eucalypt typically runs $2,500-$4,500 depending on access and powerline proximity. A mature 25m River Red Gum sits at $5,000-$7,500. Hardwood, hollows, and council permit time push prices 25-40% higher than equivalent softwood removals.
Do I need a permit to remove a Eucalypt in Melbourne?
Usually yes — most Melbourne councils protect Eucalypts above 50-80cm trunk diameter. Indigenous and significant heritage gums have stricter rules regardless of size. We check your council and handle the permit application as part of the quote.
What if there are hollows in my gum tree?
Council rules around wildlife hollows are strict. Trees with active hollows (possums, parrots, sugar gliders) often can’t be removed without an ecologist report and replacement habitat. We assess on-site and explain the options.
Can you remove a dead Eucalypt safely?
Yes — dead Eucalypts are particularly dangerous because the hardwood becomes brittle and snaps unpredictably. We usually crane-remove dead Eucalypts rather than climb them. Adds $1,500-$3,000 but eliminates the major safety risk.
